The house was discovered in the 19 th century. Catherina Emmerich (1775-1824), an invalid German nun, who had never visited Ephesus, described in great detail the house and its situation which she had seen in a vision. It is believed that St. John brought Mary (the mother of Jesus) to Ephesus sometime between AD 37-48 and she spent her last years of her life there. After that we will continue to Ancient City of Ephesus to see one of the most spectacular excavations in the world. You will see the Odeon, The Fountain of Trajan, the stream baths of Scholastika, the Temple of Hadrian, the Grand Theater and impressive library of Ephesus. The Ephesus library is adorned with columns and statues. The Grand Theater where Saint Paul preached is believed to be the largest outdoor theater in the ancient world with a capacity of 24,000 seats. Saint Paul, recognizing the significance of metropolis, arrived in 50 CE and converted a small group Ephesians to the new religion. Some percevied this devolopment of christianity as a threat to glory of Cybele(mother goddes of Anatolia) and Artemis, and forced Paul and followers to depart.Ephesus, however ,eventually became the center of Christianity in the Roman Empire. After Ephesus we will drive to Basilica of Saint John,The 6th Century Church was consructed under the Byzantine emperor Justinian on the supposed site of St.John’s grave. It was built on such an immense scale that,If reconstructed,It would remain the world’s 7th largest cathedral today. It stately,If somewhat sparse, remains are characterized by a strange combination of Roman imperial grandeur and early Christian grace and weightiness. After the lunch break ,We will drive to Izmir city center. Traditionally the birth place of Homer, who was honoured here in Classical times in the Homereium, Of the original Hellenistic city states along the Aegean coast of Asia Minor, only Smyrna, now Turkish Izmir, survived the catastrophes that befell the region. Our first stop is above the city at Mt. Pagus is the most enduring of Alexander’s legacies, the Kadifekale Castle, built in the 4th century BCE, From Kadifekale there is excellent view across the harbour to Karsiyaka. To the west you can see the shape of arena where St. Polycarp was martyred. The Agora at the foot of the hill is clearly visible. Smyrna played important part in the devolopment of Christian Church. The words of St. John to the first Christians, ’only be faithfull till death, and I will give you the crown of life’(revelation2:10,11) must have been recalled by those who witnessed the martyrdom of St. Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna. In 156 he was betrayed to the authorities and brought to Arena where Pagan festival was taking place. Ordered by the proconsul statius Quadratus to deny his faith, Polycarp refused saying’86 years I have served him and He has done me no ill; how then can I blaspheme my king who hath served me?’ The enraged crowd in the arena responded by shoting,’this is the teacher of Asia; this is destroyer of our gods; this is the father of the Christians’.Polycarp was thrown on a pyre and burned to death. After Kadifekale Drive to the cornerstone of the Cathedral of St.John The Evangelist, was laid 1862 and building was complated 1874.Donations were received from many sources. The Catholics of Lyons in France, which had been converted to Christianty in the 2C by missionaries from Smyrna, where particularly generous in their contributions. The interior of the Cathedral is richly decorated. In the sanctuary,in addition to a fine paintings of St.John The Evangelist,by A.Von Hammer, there are pictures of St.Agustine, St.Andrew, St.Athanasius,St.John Chrysostom and Smyrna’s own martyr St.Polycarp.After you have taken in the sights your Christians Bible Study Tour in Turkey, your tour guide will give you approx one hour free time to stroll at your leisure or relax have some refreshments in the the Cathedral of St. John The Evangelist, When the tour has finished your tour guide will return you to your pick up point.
