In the half day Ephesus tour from Izmir, we will pass through the verdant Izmir coasts and arrive in House of Virgin Mary on the top of Bulbul Mountain. The house was discovered in the 19 th century. Catherina Emmerich (1775-1824), an invalid German nun, who had never visited Ephesus, described in great detail the house and its situation which she had seen in a vision. It is believed that St. John brought Mary (the mother of Jesus) to Ephesus sometime between AD 37-48 and she spent her last years of her life there. After that we will continue to Ancient City of Ephesus to see one of the most spectacular excavations in the world. You will see the Odeon, The Fountain of Trajan, the stream baths of Scholastika, the Temple of Hadrian, the Grand Theater and impressive library of Ephesus. The Ephesus library is adorned with columns and statues. The Grand Theater where Saint Paul preached is believed to be the largest outdoor theater in the ancient world with a capacity of 24,000 seats. Finally we will visit the Terrace Houses, containing handsome frescoes from the 2nd century CE, which extend up the hill. They once housed the wealthier and more prominent families of the city, who lavished the interiors with superbly preserved frescoes and mosaics. The decor and furnishings of the houses have provided some interesting informations about the life style of Ephesian elite during the Roman and early Byzantine periods.Inevitably, the houses have been compared with smilar buildings found in the parts of the Roman Empire, particularly with the1C villas of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The consensus is that the Ephesians houses are in no way inferior to these. After the lunch break visit the Ephesus Museum, is the home of most of the archaeological finds unearthed in th region since 1892.those discovered before then are in Viena. The statue of  Priapus, the randy little rascal that decorates poscards at nearly every stand in Turkey, is among the treasures you will find here. The famous multi-breasted statue of Artemis,as well as exquisite buts of Eros,Athena,Socrates,The Emperors Tiberus, Marcus Aurelius, and Hadrian maket his one of the more important collections of ancient art in the world. After Ephesus Museum drive to Temple of Artemis, The last and perhaps the most important, site in Selcuk is the great Temple of Artemis (Diana), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Ephesus Artemis was a goddess of fertility and was often pictured as draped with eggs or multiple breasts, symbols of fertility, from her waist to her shoulders. Our last stop is Basilica of Saint John, The 6th Century Church was consructed under the Byzantine emperor Justinian on the supposed site of St. John’s grave. It was built on such an immense scale that, If reconst-ructed, It would remain the world’s 7th largest cathedral today. It stately, If somewhat sparse, remains are characterized by a strange combination of Roman imperial grandeur and early Christian grace and weightiness. After you have taken in the sights your Ephesus Tour guide will give you approx one hour free time to stroll at your leisure or relax have some refreshments in the cafeteria, When the tour has finished your Ephesus Tour guide will return you to your pick up point.
