Pick-up from port in Patmos and drive to St.John Monastery which is 10 minutes drive from port.We will spent about 60 minutes in this monastery.The monastery located at top of the hill and consist of interconnecting courtyards,chapels,stairways,arcades,galleries and roof terrace.Hidden in the walls are fragments of an ancient Temple of Artemis that was destroyed in the 11th century.The library of the monastery was found by Hosios Christodoulos .Today the library has 900 manuscripts.The museum has some world-class exhibits (including documents,silverwork and textiles) covering more than millennium.There are old writings dating back as far as 1073,icons and religious paintings including an original El Greco.
Then the tour countinue with a visit to the Grotto of St.John which is built around the cave where St.John lived for 2 years during his writing of the Apocalypse.He received his revelation in this cave and wrote the last book of the New Testament. The cave is large but low,so you can easily touch the ceiling.No photograph is allowed.There are 7 silver lamps hung in the cave.The largest on of these is above the place where St.John supposedly slept using a rock as a pillow that still exists in the cave.Today, a monk sits on the rock and tells the story of the Apocalypse. Cave of Apocalyse was declared to be a World Heritage Site of UNESCO.After spending 30 minutes in the cave,we will return to the Patmos port.
