The Haghia Sophia of Trabzon was built around the year 1250 as a Greek Orthodox Church under Emperor Manuel, ruler of the Trapezounta Empire of Pontus (today’s Trabzon). The church was named Haghia Sophia (Greek for Holy Wisdom), after the great church of Constantinople, today’s Aya Sofia. Although not as large, the church is still very impressive, as it was constructed in the traditional architectural shape of a cross, being 22 meters long and 11.6 meters wide. Alongside the church is a tower, which has been argued over history of its traditional use, since bell towers were not used in the time of its conception. Girls Monastery was built on the outskirts of Trabzon-Boztepe and is the only monastery that still remained in the city centre. It was firstly built by Alexious III and additions were made in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Trabzon Museum early Bronze Age, Urartian age, Iron Age, Hellenistic and Roman art works. The 2nd section houses Hellenistic and Roman-period bronze, clay and glassware. The 3rd section houses Byzantine coins, icons and the Ottoman-period artefacts.
