Depart at about 08:45 am from our terminal for a one-day trip from Athens & Cape Sounion to explore one of the most famous archaeological sites of Greece. Along the way, you will see the plain of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni & Varkiza to the most Southern point of Attica.
Athens City Tour and Visit Acropolis About 4 hours
This tour gives you an opportunity to observe the striking contrasts that make Athens such a fascinating city. Our expert tour guides will take you to see the Panathenaic Stadium where the first Olympic Games of modern times were held in 1896 (shortstop), continue and pass by the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Hadrian’s Arch, the Parliament, and the memorial to the Unknown Soldier, the Academy, the University, the National Library, and the Constitution Square (Syntagma). On the Acropolis visit the Architectural Masterpieces of the Golden Age of Athens - The Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion, and finally “ the harmony between material and spirit ”, the monument that “ puts the order in the mind ”, and also the Parthenon. Then we will continue onwards and visit the place where at last the statues found their home and admire the wonders of the classical era: The new Acropolis museum.
Continue in a local restaurant for lunch.
Driving to Cape Sounion will take about 1:30 hours
The road to Cape Sounion drives past some of the most idyllic beaches but also too many caves to count on both hands, have to hand it to the ancient Greeks as they really did know how to choose the perfect locations to construct their temples as you will soon see for yourself. We will take a drive along the scenic coastal road which has a splendid view of the Saronic Gulf, we also pass through some of Athens's most beautiful suburbs (Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkazi) till we reach Cape Sounion.
Visit the Temple of Poseidon will take about 40 minutes
Here at Cape Sounion, we will find the Temple of Poseidon just perched on the top of a rocky hill but overlooking the Aegean Sea which is guaranteed to take your breath away as on a clear day you can see at least 7 islands in front of you! The Temple of Poseidon was built in 44 B.C. and you will see that many of the original Doric columns are still standing today, the drop from the temple down to sea level is about 197 ft. so as you can see the location is just brilliant. Sounion has been a sacred site since the beginning of ancient times. the “ sanctuary of Sounion” is first mentioned in the Odyssey and it is here that you can discover the Temple of Poseidon (god of the sea) it really is a gem that is found to be standing on top of the hill overlooking the Aegean Sea. You will need to take climb up the hill to see the Temple of Poseidon so you are able to breathe in the marvelous views of the sky and the ocean below.
At the end of the tour, your guide will then drop you back off at your allocated drop-off points where you will be able to spend the rest of the day relaxing and also reviewing your day with us.
