Canakkale, an important communications centre, occupies a strategic position on the Asian side of the Canakkale sea gate, the Dardanelles, which are a little more than 1 km wide at this point. It is a good centre for visiting the World War I graves (see p 95), the site of ancient Troy and Assos.
