The tour today will begin with pick up from your allocated time and place as given to you upon time of booking, and once you have been introduced to your tour guide you will then head off on out for your exploration.
The day will begin with heading to the Ancient Acropolis and Sports Stadium, the acropolis here dates from the Classical Greek times which means between the 5th & 3rd Century BC, the acropolis does have some reconstructed areas and within these areas is where we can find the Temple of Apollo, a small theatre and also the stadium just below. Once you have explored around the sites and the huge stadium it's time to move onwards with the tour and head for the Grand Masters Castle. The Grand Masters Castle also goes by the name Kastello and is one of the few examples left on the island of Gothic Architecture within Greece, it has been recorded that this site was once known to be the citadel of the Knights Hospitaller that would be used as a Palace or head quarters / Fortress.
This Castle was enormous with having to 158 rooms but as of today only 24 are open to the public view, the decor inside is that of the 16th and 17th century and this is obvious by the coloured marble – sculptures – carpets, and even the fine oriental vases dotted around. It is sad to say that during the year 1856, a vast amount of the castle was destroyed by explosives that had been hidden in the basement of St John Church, but during the 20th century it did go under reconstruction and now is used as a museum.
The next part of the tour will take you over to Butterfly Valley, this valley is of course a natural reserve and is most certainly unique which then makes it one of a kind. The valley is a beautiful lush green area with a vast amount of butterflies attracted here because of the volume of humidity and some of these species come from Panaxia Genus and Quadripunctaria Poda. You will be able to take a walk along the pathways and breathe in the aromas that surround you such as fresh water, flowers, and of course the greenery it's an ideal place to relax and enjoy a very true real natural oasis.
As we walk through the valley you will notice some small wooden bridges cross over the running river and as you cross you will then head up the uphill pathway up to the Monastery of Panagia Kalopetra, and here lie the ruins of the Temple of Athena that dates back to the 3rd Century BC, so be sure to bring a camera to capture not only the colorful butterflies but also the great views from the Monastery Panagia Kalopetra.
After a relaxing time through the Valley, it just about wraps up your tour for today, so we will then head back to the port in Rhodes where you can re-embark your ship for departure, we trust that you have enjoyed your tour with us and we will look forward to seeing you again.
