Antalya and Perge were visited by Saint Paul and Saint Barnabas on their first journey - After this Paul and his companions took a ship from Paphos and made for Perge in Pamphylia and it was here that John left them and went back to Jerusalem. They passed from Perge and reached Pisidian Antioch where they went and took their seats in the synagogue on the Sabbath day. They preached the word of the Lord in Perge and went down to Attalia (Antalya) taking a ship there for Antioch. It is probable that from the earliest times the city was an important centre for diffusion of Christianity in Pamphylia and Perge was represented at the council of Nicaea in 325 by metropolitan Callinicus and at the council of Ephesus in 431 by one of his successors.
In the morning you will be taken by your Tour guide to Perge Ancient Site to see the extensive remains left here, Perge is around 16 km from Antalya, it is easy to imagine what a life must have been like in this prosperous town that had over 100.000 inhabitants. The Perge stadium which seated a crowd of 12.000 has a wall at the far end that was meant to protect spectators during the wild beast fights that took place here. Just against the opposite hill is an impressive Theater which features finely rendeed reliefs of Dionysus. On entering through the Roman gate, you will see a large Agora to your right and up ahead are two imposing Hellenistic Tower that mark the beginning of the long colonnaded avenue leading to the Nymphaeum, just behind is the Roman Public Bath,dating all the way from the 3C AD.
