Antalya and Perge were visited by Saint Paul and Saint Barnabas during their first journey. After this, Paul and his companions took a ship from Paphos and headed for Perge in Pamphylia. It was here that John left them and returned to Jerusalem. They passed through Perge and reached Pisidian Antioch, where they took their seats in the synagogue on the Sabbath day. Preaching the word of the Lord in Perge, they then went down to Attalia (Antalya), taking a ship to Antioch. It is probable that from the earliest times, the city was an important center for the diffusion of Christianity in Pamphylia. Perge was represented at the Council of Nicaea in 325 by Metropolitan Callinicus and at the Council of Ephesus in 431 by one of his successors.
In the morning, your tour guide will take you to the Perge Ancient Site to explore the extensive remains. Perge, located around 16 km from Antalya, provides a glimpse into the life of this prosperous town with over 100,000 inhabitants. The Perge stadium, seating a crowd of 12,000, features a wall at the far end designed to protect spectators during wild beast fights. Adjacent to the hill is an impressive theater adorned with finely rendered reliefs of Dionysus. Upon entering through the Roman gate, you'll encounter a large Agora to your right, and up ahead are two imposing Hellenistic Towers marking the beginning of the long colonnaded avenue leading to the Nymphaeum. Just behind lies the Roman Public Bath, dating back to the 3rd century AD.
